Slips in the Movies

Divorce, American Style, featuring Debbie Reynolds

Divorce American Style, released in 1967, scathingly satirizes the "american dream" marriage. Television sitcom director Norman Lear helms this dark comedy about the paralyzing process of divorce. Ex-couple Dick Van Dyke and lovely Debbie Reynolds come to realize that after the trials and tribulations of dating, debilitating alimony payouts and commiserations with fellow divorcees, married life wasn't so bad after all. Co-stars Joe Flynn, Van Johnson, Jean Simmons and Jason Robards.

The Classic 60's White Slip

The lacy white slip Debbie wears in this scene conjures fond memories of the sixties. A sweet lace bodice and generous lace hem were typical of the slips of that era. This scene showcases the physical comedy talent of Dick Van Dyke, but really reveals the "elephant in the living room", let's-not-talk-about-what's-really-going-on mode of relationship darkly present in my father's generation. Debbie as always, is gorgeous in this film.
