Slips in the Movies Reviews

Niagara, featuring Marilyn Monroe

I had forgotten how sexy Marilyn Monroe was until I saw this film for the first time in many years. The scene depicted here is from near the beginning of the movie. Watching her sultry moves in a slip, I don't think these static screen captures can do her justice. Here they are anyway, after all, what man can say no to Marilyn?

I cropped these screen captures to make them more amenable to display on a web page.

Marilyn Monroe in "Niagara"

Watching Marilyn slip on her nylons while lounging in a white lacy slip makes it easy to understand why so many guys went gaga over Marilyn in the 50s.

.

More Marilyn

In this scene, Marilyn is interrupted by a knock on the door. She's staying at a Niagara resort and she's supposed to be checked out already.

This is 50's Risqúe

You can see the outline of Marilyn's legs through her slip in this picture. Is this "daring" 1950's cinema? Awfully tame by today's standards. I still prefer this more modest tease to "My Humps" any day.

The Allure of the Seen but Unseen

I wonder if the director and cinematographer intentionally shot the slip's transparency with lighting effects, or maybe we were just lucky.

Philosophical Slip Talk

I watched this scene several times, and each time it became more apparent that this shot was created just to show off Marilyn's sex appeal. Which of course fits with the character development and story line. And, at the same time I get the feeling they were trying to sneak it in, as if cinematically representing sexuality is never morally justified. Now that's something I don't mind leaving in the 1950's.

A Slip and a Sexy Fluffy Robe

Here Marilyn reaches for her robe. She's about to answer the door and deal with the pesky resort clerk. She knows just what to do....

Add the High Heels...

Wearing high heel shoes while wearing a slip she apparently slept in, and a sexy robe with feathers seems so wonderfully ridiculous. It's obvious she's being as seductive as she can be, but the characters try to act like it's business as usual. There's something deeply erotic about this. Today, dressing like that would be considered a costume by most, and a tacky one at that. But me? I love it, give me weak-in-the-knees fashion with seams!

Oh, you wouldn't ask me to leave, would you Mr. Hotel man?

I especially love this shot because Marilyn seems to enjoy the little tease, revealing a little slip lace under her robe. The hotel clerk can't concentrate on anything but her powerful female presence, and she has him wrapped around her little finger.

Women wear pencil skirts and tight sweaters in heaven.

It looks like she took her slip off for the departure scene. As she's walking away, a man is gaping at her sexy sway, while his wife looks on visibly upset by Marilyn's effect on him.

There was only one Marilyn Monroe, and a lot of 50's ladies are eternally grateful.

I'm grateful for Marilyn too. Thanks Norma Jean.
